Key to minerals
A new online and app Lucid key for identifying minerals is now available.
Over twenty years ago, we started a project with Sue Golding, Professor of Geology at the University of Queensland, and Rob Watts, Director of Knowledge Books and Software, based in Brisbane. The purpose, and result, was the development and publication of a CD-based Lucid key for identifying 90 minerals found throughout the world.
The backward compatibility of the Lucid Builder software allowed the original key to be upgraded to the current Lucid platform. This key was initially published as a free online key and has now been published as Lucid mobile apps on the Apple and Google stores. As far as we can tell, this is the first matrix identification key developed for minerals.

This is the first Lucid key to present Lucid's new option to dynamically optimise features as the user makes selections. For example, after a feature selection Lucid can automatically prioritise features that will make a difference to the identification, while disabling those that won't. Think of it as a visual 'prune redundants', for those who are already familiar with this feature.

Thysanoptera-Phlaeothripidae genera recorded from Europe
In Europe, thrips are commonly considered to be flower-living insects, with such thrips being members of the Thysanoptera suborder Terebrantia. However, the word “thrips” is derived from a Greek word for “woodworm”. This name refers to the life-style of the many thrips species that live on dead branches and are members of the second suborder, the Tubulifera. Presented here is an information and identification system focussed on the genera of this second, and far less understood, of the two suborders.
