MySoil is a Lucid key that has been developed by the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. The key, which can be accessed online, enables growers to identify the soil type on their farm. This has been made possible by summarising thousands of different soils present in the Wheatbelt into 15 broad soil types, where the soils within each type have similar characteristics and management requirements.
Growers begin the soil analysis by selecting the soil zone that matches the farm’s location (see map). In this case, the Southern Wheatbelt has been chosen, which takes the grower to the Lucid key for that particular Zone (See the screen shot below).
By scrolling down the items in the “Possible Clues” column, various features present for that Zone can be selected, including type of surface texture, dominant soil colour, presence of stones/rocks, pH properties, etc. In this case, the feature/states selected result in one soil type – “Deep sandy duplexes”. Clicking on the respective “page” icon for that sol type brings up further details regarding the soil type, including distinguishing features, management constraints, etc.
